West Sussex VOLG (Voluntary Organisations Liaison Group) is an umbrella network of voluntary and community groups in West Sussex all working in different ways under the very broad banner of social inclusion. We started with a predominantly community care focus (health, housing and social services) many years ago but as agendas change we try not only to keep pace but to lead.

We involve organisations and people across all age groups (known as members) who include:
  • groups working across and/or within district and borough boundaries or even within the boundaries of a village
  • Councils for Voluntary Service
  • countywide groups such as associations working with people who are disabled, are deaf or hard of hearing or have a visual impairment
  • national organisations working in West Sussex, such as Scope, Mencap and Leonard Cheshire
VOLG's objectives are to reflect the interests and promote the development of the voluntary and community sector in response to the needs of all people in West Sussex.

VOLG's core work is funded by West Sussex Social and Caring Services, Health and the West Sussex Learning Partnership to help them liaise with and involve the voluntary and community sectors in planning and delivering services. An evolved database called VOLGnet helps us to keep people in contact with each other. Another tool we have developed is an email network called e-net for sharing information quickly in this fast-paced world.

It's a two-way communicating role for us - information from the statutory and voluntary sector at national, regional and local levels to the voluntary and community sector AND from the voluntary/community sector back to other agencies to influence the development of local, regional and national plans.

As part of our core work to involve people and agencies in planning and delivering services, we work with others to help them develop their services. Sometimes, VOLG itself seeks funding to develop and manage specific areas of work. We have done this by
  • recruiting and training a large number of volunteers of all ages,
  • involving & training young people, advocates and mentors (we have developed and now deliver accredited training programmes for all),
  • the use of interesting & engaging models of involving people through drama (Forum Theatre) and other varied techniques collected from many sources (Public Involvement Experience)
  • developing & supporting public & patient involvement in health
VOLG Membership currently stands at over 230 organisations within West Sussex.
