The Compact is an agreement between statutory organisations (such as District and Borough Councils) and the voluntary and community sector which seeks to improve relationships to mutual advantage. Basically it's about partnership, working together and, more importantly, understanding each other.
West Sussex has had a Compact since 2001 but it's recently been updated and revised, partly in response to interest in developing local Compacts across the County. The launch of the revised West Sussex Compact happened in March 2005 at a Voluntary Sector Forum.
The document contains a set of commitments made by both sides together with specific 'Codes of Good Practice' in
- Volunteering
- Black and Ethnic Minority Groups
- Community Groups
- Funding
- Consultation
The document has an implementation and action plan and a Compact Implementation Group has been set up to monitor progress. Organisations are being invited to 'sign up' to the principles contained in the document. See the 'Compact Links' boxes on the right for more about the Compact and how you and your organisation can get involved.
