Across the UK there is a growing commitment to involving young people in public decision making and young people are increasingly making their voices heard through a range of groups and organisations. However, in practice young people are often not given the opportunity to be involved in decisions at local, regional or national level that directly affect them.
Moving from childhood to adulthood can be a time when young people experience difficulties with family, friends, school and their own identity.
For some young people, this may lead to drug and alcohol misuse, homelessness and mental ill health, often making them extremely vulnerable and isolated. At these times young people need good quality services that will help them with their immediate problems and also help them to make positive longer-term changes in their lives.
Young People as Trainer’s supports vulnerable young people in having a greater say in the decisions that affect their lives. By participating in a Self Development and Training Skills accredited training programme (delivered jointly by young people and the ‘Young People as Trainers’ and Development Officer) young people gain the skills and confidence to become actively
involved in making
decisions about local issues and the redevelopment of their
communities, and in making decisions about the
services and structures of the organisations that they use.
Self Development Module will be run over two days, with two credited pass levels, level 2 (equal to an “O” level) and level 3 (equal to an “A” level).
This training is for 11 – 25 year old young people, who will be
required to do some pre-course work, undertake self study and actively
participate in the tutorial process.
Training Skills Module will be run over two days with two
credited pass levels, level 2 and level 3 (To apply for this course you need to have completed the Self Development Module)
This training is for 16 – 25 year old young people, which will
comprise of guided learning, self study, and actively participate in the
tutorial process, and training in how to plan and deliver a training event.
