Skills - Third Sector Event 27th April Guildford

RAISE is pleased to be hosting a free regional event on the new 'Skills - Third Sector' body. The event will take place on the 27th April at Mandolay Hotel, Guildford. The establishment of a skills body for the Third Sector reflects a significant development in learning and skills. This new body will identify and address the skills gaps and shortages for charities, voluntary groups, social enterprises and other Third Sector organisations, opening up vital learning opportunities. As well as learning about the full implications of this body you will also gain a full introduction into the work of the Third Sector National Learning Alliance (TSNLA), the voice of Third Sector learning providers.

Fire Tales Gypsy And Traveller Cultural Awareness Training

Fire Tales hosts a series of training opportunities to helps public services better understand the Romany culture and demographic. Awareness training is offered to healthcare, youth work, education, social services and policy developers. The training is tailored to those attending with packages ranging from diversity and media representation through to cultural information and racial stereotypes. Fire Tales also has a division of free events for youths.

LGBT Domestic Violence Conference

This is a conference on domestic violence in lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgendered relationships, which is being organised by the Thames Valley Domestic Abuse Coordinators. This domestic and sexual abuse conference ‘inclusive not abusive’ aims to raise awareness and improve service responses in the Thames Valley Area. The conference will take place in Oxford at the Belfry Hotel on the 27th March and spans a whole day.

Mind, the national mental health charity has announced that the Ecominds programme is now open for applications. Through the Ecominds programme, Mind will fund a range of groups who want to encourage people with experience of mental distress to get involved in environmental projects, such as improving open spaces and wildlife habitats, designing public art and recycling. Funded through the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme, Ecominds will have £7.5 million to distribute around 125 new and existing projects around England over the next five years. Applications can be made at any time.

Funding To Reduce Women Offenders
---
On 3rd February 2009 Maria Eagle, Ministerial Champion for Women in the Criminal Justice System announced £15.6m of new money to prevent and reduce offending by women. This funding will invest in the provision of additional services in the community offering one-stop-shop services at women’s centres and other specialist provisions for women in the community. The project has been set up to deliver the Government’s commitment to ensure that vulnerable women who are not a danger to the public are dealt with appropriately in the community.

Funding to Promote Financial Inclusion

The Friends Provident Foundation makes grants of up to £200,000 to not-for profit organisations for projects that address financial exclusion within disadvantaged communities. The funding is distributed through the Financial Inclusion Programme 2007 – 2009. Applications close on 10th July 2009.

Funding For Joint Projects between UK Young People And France

The Lefevre Trust provides funding of up to £10,000 to support projects between young people in France and the UK. It aims to improve understanding between the UK and France by enabling young people to visit a partner group and further develop a joint venture. Applications for funding are accepted across the UK for young people aged 11-19. Grants will be awarded to cover mobility costs of both one-way and reciprocal visits to France and its overseas departments that form part of a bilateral project. Projects must have specific aims, with activities and work providing a central theme, for example language learning and culture. The applications deadline is the 15th May 2009.

Launch Date Announced For BT Community Connections

British Telecom has announced that it will be launching the 2009 Community Connections Awards on the 17th March 2009. BT Community Connections has been run by BT's Corporate Responsibility Unit since 2000. The scheme targets community and voluntary groups that could benefit from internet access and ICT but don't necessarily have the resources. The package is valued at £1,300.

Community Radio Fund

The Office of Communications (Ofcom) has announced that next round for funding applications under its Community Radio Fund will open on the 15th April 2009. Community radio stations will be invited to apply for funding to support their core running costs. There is no upper limit of grants however the minimum grant is £5,000. Grants can only be made to community radio licensees who are broadcasting under a community radio licence. During the last bidding round the average grant awarded was £13,365 and the maximum grant was £16,000. The closing date for applications will be the 12th May 2008.

2012 London Cultural Skills Fund (London)

The London Development Agency (LDA) has announced that it is seeking applications under the 2012 London Cultural Skills Fund. The fund is open to Local Authorities and Third sector organisations such as charities, credit union, self-help groups, social and community enterprises and community based co-operatives aims to support projects that contribute to the range of cultural activities taking place during the Cultural Olympiad. Eligible organisations can apply for grants of between £25,000 and £50,000. The LDA want to support strong community-based skills, training and employment projects and are keen to receive applications from local Third Sector organisations particularly minority-led organisations. The LDA are seeking projects that will work with groups who are not usually involved in arts or cultural projects to explore the different cultures that exist in London. The closing date for applications is 5 pm on the 27th March 2009.

Its Your Community Initiative (UK)

O2 have committed £1 million to the “Its Your Community” initiative. Its Your Community, which is managed by the Conservation Foundation, provides grants of £100 to £1,000 to individuals and groups to improve their local environment. The type of projects supported in the past included environmental projects such as turning derelict land into an amenity park or wildlife area, tree planting, creating a wildlife pond, renovating neglected river and canal footpaths, providing water butts and recycling facilities in village halls, etc. The commitment by O2 means that the initiative will now be able to support up to 60 projects per month. Applications can be made at any time and are judged on the 20th of every month.

Empowerment Fayre 18th March

All Inclusive Disability Consultants, a Community Interest Company based in Kingsley near Bordon, is about to launch its Empowerment Fayre. These bi-annual fayres will be held in different locations around Hampshire and will assist disabled people to meet local and diverse disability organisations and services face-to-face. The first of these will be held on 18th March 2009 at Alton Community Centre. Lasham Gliding Club is exhibiting its fully accessible glider in the Community Centre car park. This is a unique opportunity for anyone with a disability to come and see what can be possible. There will also be alternative therapists providing free treatments such as Indian Head Massages, as it is well documented that the alternative approach can often result in physical benefits.

Working With The Criminal Justice System 18th March

The Regional Offender Manager for the South East will be hosting this conference to raise awareness of what the Voluntary/Community Sector contributes to offenders, safer communities and crime reduction in the area, what issues they have and what practical ways the Regional Offender Manager’s team can help. The event will consult on the document ‘Working with the Third Sector to Reduce Reoffending’ and provide an opportunity to question the panel, make connections and find out what is happening in the region as a whole.

South East England Faith Forum Conference 26th March

This event is designed for organisations to take part in discussions around the consultation of the future of South East England Faith Forum (SEEF). Commision For The Compact Time Concern

The Commission for the Compact is concerned about the time it is taking to draft legislation giving it statutory powers. The Office of the Third Sector asked Sir Bert Massie, Commissioner for the Compact, to lead a national debate on the future of the Compact from last August. With Bert Massie’s recommendations sent three months ago, developments have not yet to been announced.

Local Involvement Networks Announcement

The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) have announced that they will be funding a small number of action learning projects to expand the remit of Local Involvement Networks (LINKs) beyond health and social care. The four LINKs selected for this pilot scheme are Ealing, Milton Keynes, Northumberland and Stoke-on-trent.

Fifty six Councils in England have collected a set of awards for their performance. The winners of the 2009 Beacon awards will receive a share of £3million government funding to expand their work. Brighton and Hove City Council's work to manage the night time economy has been singled out for praise, whilst Kent County Council is recognised for encouraging its communities to be more active as part of the Olympic Games and Paralympics legacy.

Funding to Develop the Sustainability of Young Social Enterprises

The Adventure Capital Fund (ACF) has announced that it is accepting applications under its Business Development Grant scheme. The ACF offers support to develop stable and sustainable community based enterprises. Under the Business Development Grant scheme, funding of up to £15,000 is available to support community enterprises in their early stages of development by developing their skills and capacity. To be eligible for funding, organisations need to serve one or more clear communities – of place, interest or identity; be established within the community that they seek to serve and have members of that community involved in and represented in the management and decision-making processes; and be looking to use entrepreneurial methods to achieve social goals. Nostalgia May Be Key To Donations

A US research body is aiming to measure whether treasured memories act as a trigger point to donate. The project, led by John Ford, professor of marketing and international business at Old Dominion University in Virginia, US, will develop a scale on which charities can measure how the tendency to give is affected by evoking certain emotions and memories.

RAISE Senior Policy Officer

Want to play a part in really changing the South East?

RAISE exists to champion the Third Sector’s unique contribution to making South East England socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. The Senior Policy Officer post (fixed term until 31 March 2011) is funded by Capacitybuilders to develop a strong and independent ‘voice’ of the Third Sector. This will involve ensuring the Sector is well supported on key regional strategic and policy structures, building partnerships with those working in and with marginalised communities and sectors, ensuring the Sector is embedded in the new regional arrangements, building relationships with and lobbying key sub-regional, regional and national stakeholders, researching and developing a tool to enable RAISE to begin to measure the social and economic impact of the Sector in the South East.

To succeed applicants will need to demonstrate a knowledge of working in policy development in social or economic policy areas, the ability to influence on a wide range of issues, knowledge of relevant policies affecting the Third Sector, proven project management skills and ideally to have worked as a Policy Officer within the Sector.

Surrey Community Action is looking for a dynamic applicant with significant management experience to lead a high profile team of Community Development Workers working in diverse communities. This is a part time contract for two years and involves working 2 days per week on a salary of £28,284 per annum (£11,313 pro-rata) with an additional 5% pension. The role is located in Guildford. This is a full time, two year contract on a salary of £25,325 plus a 5% pension. The role is in Guildford. Surrey Community Action is seeking a worker to support rural communities to identify and address their needs, and to take collective action to strengthen social inclusion and achieve improved quality of life particularly for groups at risk of social exclusion. You will be prepared to travel throughout Surrey, have a full driving licence and reliable use of a car. Some flexible working is possible with this job role.
