EQUALITIES --- New Mental Health Strategy --- Care Services Minister Phil Hope has announced a new mental health strategy called "New Horizons". This new strategy will promote good mental health and well-being, whilst improving services for people who have mental health problems. The Strategy will build on the National Service Framework for mental health, acknowledged as the catalyst for a transformation in mental health care over the last ten years - which comes to an end in 2009.

Time To Get Equal Week 8th – 15th June --- The week aims to support disabled individuals, groups and their allies to campaign on the key issues within their local communities. The week is a focal point for raising awareness and amplifying the voices of disabled people.

New Tackling Race Inequalities Fund --- Communities and Local Government have announced a £6million Tackling Race Inequalities Fund to support Third Sector organisations in tackling racial inequalities and promoting equality of opportunity for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups.

Conference: Gypsy And Travellers Living With Domestic Violence – 8th May --- This is the first national conference aimed at supporting Gypsies and Travellers living with Domestic Violence. The conference will be held on 8th May in London. A recent Equalities and Human Rights Commission report stated that between 61% and 81% of Gypsy or Traveller women “had experienced direct domestic abuse”. Delegates will hear from speakers from 4 key organisations responsible for cutting edge work with Gypsies. The conference will also launch new cultural guidance for DV workers.

FUNDING ---
Mind Announces Awards --- Mind, the national mental health charity has announced awards of over £1 million in funding to 9 projects. Through the Ecominds programme, Mind will fund a range of groups (including schools and colleges) who want to encourage people with experience of mental distress to get involved in environmental projects, such as improving open spaces and wildlife habitats, designing public art or recycling. Over the next five years Ecominds will have £7.5 million to distribute to 125 new and existing projects.

Support For Separating Families --- The Department for Children, Schools and Families is seeking expression of interest to run a new pilot scheme for the provision of local services for separating parents and their children. A total of £1.3 million is available in 2009/10 and £3.45 million in 2010 / 11 to fund up to 10 pilots within defined local areas. The lead partner can be a local authority, a Third Sector or charitable organisation, a private sector organisation or a primary care trust. Partnerships interested in participating in one of the pilots need to submit an expression of interest form by the 22nd April 2009.

Modernisation Fund Website Now Live --- Further details on the £16.5million Real Help for Communities; Modernisation Fund have been announced by Capacitybuilders and Futurebuilders. The fund represents a combination of grant and loan funding.

GreenPrints Programme --- SITA GreenPrints programme awards grants of up to £10,000 as well as practical support and advice to enable young people to make a real difference to the communities in which they live. The funding is for projects designed and delivered by groups of volunteers aged 16 to 25. One of the most unusual elements of this programme is the individual, dedicated mentor-support that will be provided by the BTCV and The Wildlife Trusts to assist with the practical delivery of every single project that is supported. The next application deadline for the SITA Green Prints programme has been announced as the 15th June 2009.

Digital Film Archive --- Screen South are open to applications through the Digital Archive Fund. The Digital Archive Fund is a UK Film Council fund set up to increase public access to regional screen heritage. The South East region has £250,000 available to award over two years. Screen South are seeking applications for ambitious projects that aim to inspire the broadest possible engagement with screen heritage material, from education projects working with specific target groups to large-scale screening programmes for general audiences. Projects must focus on public engagement with screen heritage and could take a variety of forms including film-making/new commissions, exhibition, distribution, broadcast, online, education or participatory work.

It’s Your Community Initiative --- O2 have committed £1 million to the “Its Your Community” initiative. Managed by the Conservation Foundation, the initiative provides grants ranging form £100 to £1,000 to improve your local environment. The commitment by O2 means that the initiative will now be able to support up to 60 projects per month. Applications can be made at any time and are judged on the 20th of every month.

‘Virgin Money Giving’ Claims Lower Rates Than Rivals --- The Virgin Group has claimed that the transaction charges for charities on its new fundraising website will undercut rival companies by more than 70 per cent.

Sector Supports ImpACT --- Sector organisations have stepped in to support the ImpACT Coalition after the Institute of Fundraising decided to reduce its £50,000 annual grant. The Charities Aid Foundation has given £15,000 to the initiative, and the Charity Finance Directors' Group and the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association have each agreed to provide £5,000. The grants came into effect on 6th April.

Charities Discount When Joining Fundraising Standards Board --- Members of the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) are being offered 50% off their membership fee if they also join the Fundraising Standards Board.The discount will apply when organisations join the PFRA or renew their membership.

Lloyds TSB Funding --- The Lloyds TSB Foundation has given £4.2million in grants to 164 charities in its latest round of funding. Linda Kelly, Chief Executive of the Lloyds TSB Foundation stated that ‘ in this uncertain time for the voluntary sector, it is more essential than ever tha we continue to support charities’ day to day running costs, includig salaries.’

Sweeble Desktop Publishing Launched --- Sweeble is a new desktop publishing program which is easily accessible for Voluntary/Community Organisations. The program has been developed by Sweeble, a small rural start-up in Staffordshire. The system lets users write and edit articles, upload and crop images and work with sweeble’s design templates to produce full-colour publications. Designer Sue Greenwood said: “This isn’t just desktop publishing, we’ve built something way beyond that. Sweeble is targeted at the groups and individuals who drive our communities – sports clubs, arts groups, theatre groups, PTAs and so on, and all those small organisations putting a spark into local life.’

Third Sector Foresight Annual Conference – 19th May --- The Third Sector Foresight Annual Conference will explore the future of the Voluntary/Community Sector by looking at key trends. It will provide delegates with a better understanding of what the future might throw at them, so that they can make more effective strategic decisions for the future of their organisations. Speakers at the vent include Adam Gordon, author of ‘Future Savvy: Identifying Trends to Make Better Decisions, Manage Uncertainty, and Profit from Change’.
Early bookings will receive a 10% booking discount until 23rd April. In addition 5 bursaries are also available for small organisations and a further 5 bursaries for trustees.

National Conference Young People And Violent Crime – 30th April --- The national conference will look at innovative solutions to young people and violent crime through multi agency working. The event will take place on Thursday 30th April 2009 at One Birdcage Walk, Westminster, London. This one-day national conference, hosted by the Centre for Parliamentary Studies, provides a timely opportunity for local practitioners to assess the progress of the action plans in relation to tackling youth violence. Delegates will consider how the ‘triple track’ approach of prevention, enforcement & punishment, can be implemented fully & effectively at the local level, bringing closer together the work of police, probation, local authorities, health services & education authorities.

Disability And Equality Training --- Accentuate, The Independent Street Network (ISAN) and Attitude is everything have been working together to provide free training. The free disability equality training is aimed at outdoor arts and events practitioners across the South East. The training is aimed specifically at creative producers or local authority officers responsible for producing street/celebratory arts and outdoor work. The deadline to book a place on this training is the 24th April.

Government Announces £750,000 Fund To Support Campaigning --- Sector organisations have welcomed the Government's announcement of a £750,000 fund to support innovative campaigning. The fund will reward projects that give a voice to marginalised groups or have innovative approaches.It will be divided between up to 30 projects over the next two years. A spokesperson for the Office of the Third Sector said it was a response to the 2007 Third Sector review's commitment to supporting campaigning.

Real Help Now: Communities Action Plan Less Funding Anticipated --- Within the Action Plan the Office of the Third Sector stated that the volunteer brokerage scheme, funded by the Departmaent for Work and Pensions (DWP) would be worth up to £10million. However a DWP spokespeson said the fund would provide £8 million, suggesting that the action plan is now likely to be worth £40.5 million rather than £42.5 million.

G20 London Summit --- Third Sector leaders held a Civil Society G20 pre-meeting on 1 April. At the meeting they talked about the hugely positive relationship with Government and how both parties needed to work ever more closely to deliver real progress on climate change, sustainability, tackling worklessness, social justice and supporting a new, 'value-driven' society.

Labour Compulsory Community Service Plan --- Voluntary/Community Organsiations are divided in opinion over Gordon Brown’s suggestion that teenagers should perform 50 hours of compulsory community service. A debate has ensued over whether such enforced community service can be regarded as volunteering.

New Application To Support Social Enterprises --- A new online application that will help the public to find out about and support social enterprises is being developed by the social entrepreneur networking site UnLtdWord. An application called UnLtdWorld Exchange will allow users to locate projects and offer them time, skills or funding. Users of UnLtdWorld, which has 9,000 members, will be able to search for projects that interest them, register their support and make donations. They will also be able to enter details of the types of project they want to set up or support and explain what skills or finance they have to offer.

Most Enterprising Place In The UK? --- Business Minister, Lord Mandelson, is calling for hotspots of innovation to enter the Enterprising Britain 2009 competition and have their efforts recognised on a national scale. Places where a culture of enterprise is supporting and encouraging entrepreneurs and businesses, helping them to survive the downturn and emerge stronger on the other side are encouraged to participate.

A More Positive Economic Outlook --- NCVO have produced a paper titled ‘Economic Downturns and the Voluntary Sector, what can we learn from historical evidence.’ The paper suggests that the effects of the economic downturn may not be as negative as predicted. The paper claims the sector should be wary of negative forecasts because charities have historically been well equipped to deal with tough economic conditions.

Male Independent Domestic Violence Advisor
Berkshire East & South Bucks Women’s Aid is a local organisation providing emotional and practical support to victims of Domestic Abuse. There is currently an opening within the advocacy team, providing specialist support to male victims. The salary for this role will be £20,000 per annum.
As a Male IDVA you will provide a pro-active and structured service to a caseload of male clients who have been assessed as High-Risk. You will develop and maintain personal support plans with a strong focus on Risk Management and Safety Planning. You will be required to advocate on behalf of your client within a multi-agency setting and provide assistance in facilitating appropriate civil and criminal remedies.
Previous experience of directly supporting vulnerable adults is a must, as is a thorough understanding of the dynamics of Domestic and Sexual Abuse. Ideally, you will be trained to CAADA Standards.
A full, clean driving licence is essential. You will also be required to participate in an out-of hours on-call rota. The closing date for applications is the 24th April 2009.

New Chair Of The Board Of Trustees at Thames Valley Partnership
The Thames Valley Partnership is looking to appoint a new Chair of the Board of Trustees.
The Thames Valley Partnership is a charity which brings people and organisations together across the Thames Valley to work for safer and stronger communities. The Thames Valley Partnership works to strengthen and support partnerships, seeking out innovative and long-term solutions to crime and community safety.
The role of the Chair is to support and guide the work of the Thames Valley Partnership. There is an active Board of ten Trustees, who bring significant skills and expertise from across the Sectors and interests of the Partnership’s work. The Board of Trustees meets quarterly with sub-committees meeting in between to ensure proper governance.
The post holder will need to have some experience of previous board level or senior management, an understanding of the role of public and/or voluntary sectors in the criminal justice system and a commitment to the values of the Partnership.
The time commitment for the Chair is estimated at 15 to 20 days a year but with potential for involvement in aspects of the work of the Partnership. There is no remuneration for the post of Chair but out of pocket expenses will be paid. The post represents an exciting opportunity to become involved and influence the organisation as it develops its new strategy. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 6th May 2009.

Schools’ Coordinator - Slough
This is a fixed term role until 31st March 2010 on a salary of £29,194 per annum. The role involves working within a multi-disciplinary partnership to develop a programme of activities and projects to engage secondary age young people in the Community Cohesion and Preventing Violent Extremism agenda.
You will need substantial experience of working with young people and their families, combined with a good understanding of the PREVENT agenda and its implications for the diverse communities of Berkshire East.
