Call For Comments: Tackling Racial Inequalities Document
---
The Communities and Local Government Department is seeking responses to its published discussion document ‘Tackling Racial Inequalities’. This document seeks opinion to build upon existing race equality legislation and set the context for future inclusion and harmonisation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities within wider communities, working environments and other aspects of life.

RAISE will be responding to the document. Please email your comments to john@raise-networks.org.uk or call 01483 885264 to discuss this document further. The deadline for comments is 5pm on Tuesday 5th May.

Together We Can End Violence Against Women And Girls

This Home Office consultation paper sets out a cross-government approach to combating violence against women. The proposals build on a programme of action that the Government is delivering to tackle sexual violence. A series of events will be running across the UK as a result of this consultation.

Radical Middle Way Event – 27th April

The Radical Middle Way (RMW) is a grassroots initiative aimed at articulating a relevant mainstream understanding of Islam that is dynamic, proactive and relevant to young British Muslims. In partnership with Slough Borough Council, Radical Middle Way are holding a musical and lyrical event at ‘the Centre’ in Slough.

Awards For Bridging Cultures

The Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABCs) were launched by the Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo) in 2008. Funded by the Baring Foundation, the ABCs reward local schemes and projects, run by grass roots, Voluntary/Community Organisations that help to build bridges between communities and cultures. A one-day learning event and awards ceremony in winter 2009 will showcase shortlisted projects in each of the categories and celebrate overall winners.

The Involvement Awards

The NHS Centre for Involvement (NCI) is rewarding innovation and imagination in Patient and Public involvement through The Involvement Awards 2009 – a new national award scheme.

The awards are split into two categories Commissioning and Provider. Judges will be looking for projects which can demonstrate the real impact and sustainable change which public and patient involvement has made on services. The winner of each category will be awarded a prize fund of £5000 to disseminate the work and findings of their project to a wider audience. The deadline for applications is Friday 15th May 2009.

Funding For The Regeneration Of Public Parks

The Heritage Lottery Fund has announced that eight communities across the UK will be sharing grants totaling £14million from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Parks for People programme. A further £1.6million of development funding has also been awarded to 13 other parks to help them work up detailed proposals for applications of more than £20million. The Parks for People programme is open to local authorities as well as not for profit organisations that own public parks and gardens. Organisations can apply for grants of between £250,000 and £5 million.

There are two funding rounds each year and the next deadline for applications is the 31st August 2009.

Nationwide Foundation Grants Programme

The Nationwide Foundation has announced that its Investor Programme is now open for applications. The Investors Programme offers grants of up to £300,000 over three years to charities with an income of less than £10 million a year. Grants are provided for research, new projects, pilot projects and existing work. The Foundation are also able to fund core costs and to contribute towards the salaries of finance staff for the charity.

The closing date for applications through the Investor Programme is the 31st May 2009.

Government to Launch Targeted Support Fund

The Office of the Third Sector has announced that it will be launching the £15 million Targeted Support Fund in the next few weeks. The funding will be available in the 50 areas most at risk from the recession. The areas that will benefit from the grants programme are now available to view on the Cabinet Office website.

Heroes Return 2 Scheme Opens
---
The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has announced the Heroes Return 2 Scheme is now open to applications. The scheme provides funding to help World War II veterans to mark the anniversary of events that led to the end of WWII. The Heroes Return Scheme offers fixed grants of between £150 and £5,500 for each veteran and their spouse and/or carer towards the cost of their visit. Applications can be submitted at any time between the 1st April 2009 and the 31st January 2011.

The Office of Communications (Ofcom) has launched the latest bidding round under its Community Radio Fund. The closing date for applications is 5 pm on the 12th May 2009.

LIFE+ Programme To Launch Next Call For Proposals

The European Commission has announced that it will be launching a new call for proposals under the LIFE+ programme on the 15th May 2009. The LIFE + programme is the European Union’s main fund for supporting environmental projects. With a budget of €2.143 billion, it will address all four priority areas of the Sixth Environment Action Programme.

Gypsy And Travellers Site Grants

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the national housing and regeneration agency for England has announced that it is is inviting applications for funding through the Gypsy and Traveller Sites Grant 2009 – 2011. The fund is open to local authorities, Arms Length Management Organisations and registered Social Landlords who wish to provide social rented sites. The deadline for bids is the 30th June.

Skills Third Sector To Be Fully Established By September
---
The Office of the Third Sector and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills have pledged £2.5million over three years to set up Skills - Third Sector. It is being established as a charity and will perform a similar role to the Sector skills councils in addressing skills gaps and ensuring the needs of Voluntary/Community Organisations (VCOs) are considered in the development of national occupational standards.

NCVO Barclays Leadership Programme

If you are a Chair of Trustees, Chief Executive, or team leader within a smaller Voluntary/ Community Organisation, this programme offers the chance to build on your leadership skills. Using a combination of facilitated workshops, action learning, assessment tools and self-directed learning, the emphasis of the programme will be on peer learning, linking learning to current workplace and Sector challenges.

Building A Culture Of Participation – 19th May Brighton

This course equips participants with basic theory, practical approaches and tools to help build a culture of participation within an organisation. Gordon Brown Unveils Community Work Scheme

The Prime Minister has announced that approximately 20,000 young people we get the opportunity to do full time community work as part of a £146 million government scheme. The scheme is targeted at school leavers as an additional component of the Entry to Employment Schemes which have been designed to help school leavers gain employment. The scheme supports Gordon Browns' drive to boost good citizenship across the UK.

Key Compact Principles For The Economic Downturn

The Compact is an agreement between Government and the Voluntary/Community Sector (VCS) in England. It recognises shared values, principles and commitments and sets out guidelines for how both parties should work together.

Compact Voice, which represents the VCS in taking forward the Compact, has put together a 2-page practical guide on key Compact principles for the economic downturn. Budget Announces £20 Million Hardship Fund For Charities

New Programme For Homeless Entrepreneurs
---
Spark a development and investment programme has announced a new fund to support homeless entrepreneurs. ‘Sparklers’ is a one year pilot programme that has a total of £50,000 available to support promising entrepreneurs who have a business idea and want to launch a social enterprise. To be eligible the applicant must be living in supported housing or currently be homeless. Sparklers aims to support 5 promising individuals who want to set up a social business. A cash prize of between £500 and £5,000 is available for each successful individual. The Closing Date for applications is 5 pm on the 18th May 2009.

A record number of prizes have been given out for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2009. The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform announced 194 winners, the largest number in the 44 years of the scheme.

Big Issue Invest Launches £10 Million Fund

Big Issue Invest has launched a £10 million social enterprise fund. The fund, which will take money from charities, institutional investors and high net-worth individuals, is aiming to invest in social enterprises in the health and social care, environment, and employment and skills sectors.The fund will invest between £100,000 and £500,000 in each business.

Anniversary Of Volunteers Week - Photographic Competition

As part of Hampshire and Isle of Wight volunteers’ week, a county wide photographic competition is taking place. The competition is in partnership with BBC South Today and aims to celebrate the changing face of volunteering throughout the last 25 years. First Prize is £500 for the chosen charity and £100 for the photographer.

Community First East Hampshire is recruiting a new Chair to lead the Trustees and to be responsible for the strategic direction, governance and development of this highly regarded charity based in Petersfield. The constitution reflects this as a 3 year post.

The Chair will be required to have an understanding of the Voluntary/Community Sector, governance of a charity, charity law, company law and other relevant legislation. The chairperson will need to be a strong strategic thinker with the ability to communicate and consult effectively with other colleagues in East Hampshire, and to represent the Voluntary/Community Sector on strategic bodies.Meetings are held quarterly and rotate mornings/evenings in Petersfield. Other time commitments may involve attending various meetings throughout the year and administration time.

Trustee Responsible For Quality At Community First East Hampshire

Community First East Hampshire needs a new Trustee preferably with experience in Quality Standards processes, to be responsible for the management and development of this Community First East Hampshire whish is based in Petersfield. This is a 3 year post.

The role will involve supporting a staff and volunteer team who offer a range of services within the local community to a wide range of local charitable organisations. They will need to be able to think strategically and will have Quality standards experience. They must be able to communicate and consult effectively with other colleagues in East Hampshire, and to represent the Voluntary/Community Sector on strategic bodies if necessary.

Part Time Administration Officer – Community First East Hampshire

This role is on a salary of £13,027 pro rata per annum and will involve working 15 hours per week.

Community First East Hampshire is looking for someone to provide administrative support. The role will involve photocopying, reception work, help with maintaining databases, record keeping and co-ordinating tasks for our office volunteers. The closing date for applications will be 18th May.
