RAISE Chair Welcomes New Equality Bill

Caroline Shaw, Chair of RAISE welcomed the publication of the Equality Bill on 27th April, commenting that the Bill ‘will further underpin and strengthen the tremendous efforts being made by RAISE members and the Voluntary/Community Sector in the region as a whole, towards the provision of a more equitable and inclusive community and society’.

SEEFF Proposal Document

After holding a number of consultation events in the region, the South East England Faiths Forum (SEEFF) have now produced a proposal document for their organisation, including the governance structure and an associated business plan. SEEFF is now looking to elect a Regional Board from its membership base.

Gift Aid Time Cut Short
---
HM Revenue and Customs has confirmed that the time allowed for charities to reclaim Gift Aid on donations will fall by 2 years from April 2010. Charities will now have four years to reclaims Gift Aid.

Barry Gower managing director of gain, a gift aid recovery consultancy warned that ‘this is a wake-up call for charities. They need to check they have claimed all the gift aid they are entitled to.’

£1billion Job Fund Open For Bids

Ministers are inviting Voluntary/Community Organisations (VCOs) and public agencies across Britain to bid for funding to create 150,000 new jobs. The £1billion future jobs fund will provide money to pay people for six month posts. It will be targeted at those aged 18-24 but there will also be funding for older people from disadvantaged groups and areas worst hit by unemployment. The fund, announced in the Budget, will mean that by January every person aged 18-24 who has been out of work for a year will be guaranteed a new job, training or paid work experience place.

Children In Need
---
Organisations working with disadvantaged young people aged 18 or under are able to apply for funding through the BBC’s Children in Need Programme. Funding is available to organisations (including schools) that work with young people who are disabled, suffering from distress or abuse, have psychological difficulties or are living in poverty or situations of deprivation. There is no minimum or maximum amount when applying for funds from Children in Need. The next application deadline is 15th July 2009.

Crisis Changing Lives Programme To Reopen

Crisis, the national Homeless Charity has announced that the Changing Lives Programme will re-open for application on the 25th May 2009. The Crisis Changing Lives programme awards funding for up to £2,500 to solitary people who are homeless or settling into a home and looking for support so that they may achieve their vocational goals. The Awards can be used for course fees, equipment and materials to set up a business or get back to work. Applications can not be made by the homeless person, but rather by the support organisation providing ongoing help. The closing date for applications is the 3rd July 2009.

Volant Charitable Trust

The Trust, set up by author J K Rowling supports registered charities whose purpose is to alleviate poverty and social deprivation with particular emphasis on children’s and women’s issues. In addition the Trustees will as and when appropriate, support disaster appeals. The Trust will support both capital and revenue funding. The closing date for applications is the 28th August 2009.

Rank Foundation Grant Programme

The Rank Foundation is seeking applications through the Rank Foundation grant programme to support capital projects in adult member hospices in the UK, which have a direct impact on older patients. This year the Rank Foundation looking for pplications that support Hospice at Home services, such as laptops, a vehicle and pilot projects that aim to support Hospice at Home services. Grants can be awarded to stand alone Hospice at Home services or to hospices that offer a broad range of services including Hospice at Home. Total available funding in this round is £116,000 and the Rank Foundation are looking to make grants of between £10,000 and £20,000 each. The deadline for applications is the 11th June 2009.

Virgin Media Shorts Competition

The Virgin Media Shorts Competition 2009 is now open for submissions. The top 12 short films will be shown on 214 cinema screens across the UK. Out of the 12 films one will be selected to win a £15,000 prize. The deadline for short film submissions is the 22nd June 2009.

Government Announces New High Street Decline Fund
---
To prevent the decline of the high street during the economic recession, the Government has announced plans to set up a £3 million fund to help communities find creative ways to reduce the negative impact of empty shops. Empty shops will be converted for use as cultural, community or learning centres. This funding would include the costs of decorating; publicity posters and other activities that can help town centres attract and retain visitors.

Independence at Home is a national charity that helps to improve independence, comfort, safety, dignity and quality of life for people with long-term illness and disability by helping towards the cost of adaptations, equipment or other things that are not available from public funds. Applications can be submitted at any time.

Funding Fair – 12th June

South Downs Council for Voluntary Services are holding a free event for Voluntary/Community Organisations (VCOs). The funding fair will involve speakers and workshops offering advice and guidance on financial concerns. The event will span a full day and will take place in Lewes Town Hall, East Sussex.

Transforming Disabled Children Services Through Partnership – 14th May

The event will take place on Thursday 14th May 2009 at The Academy Conference Centre, Holiday Inn Regent's Park, London. This conference will provide an opportunity for local practitioners and stakeholders to assess the progress made in transforming disabled children’s services and consider the barriers that still need to be overcome, particularly in light of the current economic climate. Attending the conference will cost approximately £295 per person or £265 if two people are booking, prices for businesses and the central government will be higher.

Sync South East Leadership Development Programme

Sync South East is a new leadership development programme recruiting over April 2009. It is designed to support and develop deaf and disabled people and disability arts organisations. The programme is funded by Arts Council England, South East with funds from Accentuate. Two free leadership programmes are available, one for organisations (and projects) and one for individuals. Sync South East aims to spend the next two and a half years developing leadership skills, knowledge and experience in innovative, creative and accessible ways.

Consultation On Giving Children And Young People The Right To Appeal

This consultation seeks views on giving children and young people a right to appeal decisions regarding exclusions, special educational need statements, assessments and to make disability discrimination claims in England.

Community Investment - Hazel Blears
---
As part of the Government's empowerment agenda, Hazel Blears has announced a new advice line - 0845 345 4564 - and other Government support to make it easier for people to take control of community assets, from community centres to theatres. Already, there are estimated to be over £1billion worth of buildings under community control - with some agreements dating back to the 1970s.

Compact Refresh

A new version of the National Compact will be published in November 2009. This follows a request from Kevin Brennan, Minister for the Third Sector, and Simon Blake, chair of Compact Voice to Sir Bert Massie, Commissioner for the Compact, asking him to lead the process to redraft the document. The Compact has not been revised since former Prime Minister Tony Blair established it in 1998 to outline how the Voluntary and public sectors should behave towards each other.

Funding For Young Social Enterprises
---
The Adventure Capital Fund (ACF) has announced that the next funding round of its Business Development Grant scheme will open on the 4th May 2009. The ACF offers a range of investments and support to develop stable and sustainable community based enterprises. The Adventure Capital Fund expects to make around 40 Business Development Grants a year. Eligible costs could include: technical assistance and advice, legal or other fees relating to building purchase or development, business planning, training, feasibility studies, market research or product development. The next closing date for applications will be the 29th May 2009.

Fifteen Seeks Candidates For Social Enterprise Scheme

Jamie Oliver’s social enterprise is looking for charities to nominate disadvantaged young people to take part in an apprenticeship scheme at its London Branch. Eligible young people must be aged between 18 and 24, living inside the M25 and not in employment, education or training when they apply.

Record Fundraising Total For London Marathon
---
According to donor website Justgiving, this year's Flora London Marathon raised a record £22.4million for charities. A spokesman for the organisation said the figure was 7% higher than the 2008 total, although there was a fall in the average donation from £32 to £29.50 an increase in the number of donors had compesated for this.

Volunteer Trustees Required For Diana Francis House

Diana Francis House in Caterham is a five bedroom supported housing scheme for those aged 18 to 45 years, who have a physical, sensory and/or mild learning disability. The scheme supports tenants to prepare for future independent living. Two Supported Housing Officers help the tenants learn about housekeeping, budgeting, managing their own care and generally living and sharing with other people. Diana Francis House has a supportive Management Committee which meets every two months to discuss the running of the House and to offer advice, support and guidance on a variety of housing and support matters. Diana Francis House is actively seeking new Trustees and would be keen to meet with suitable applicants.

To apply for this role you will need relevant disability experience and to commit to one afternoon, primarily a Tuesday every few months. Trustess will need an enthusiasm for meeting the needs of young adults with disabilities, good independent judgement combined with the ability to think creatively and a willingness to speak your mind.

Part Time Volunteer Placement Officer

Rushmoor Voluntary Services are looking for a person to lead a new project helping people with or recovering from mental illness, to get involved in volunteering and community activities.

The project will work within the community through gardening, an allotment and a training programme for volunteers. The project manager will need a keen interest in gardening and environment and the capability to work with mental illness. The role is funded until March 2012 and the closing date for applications is the 26th May 2009. Your own transport is required for this job role.
