RAISE Responds To South East Regional Select Committee

Following our recent call for comments RAISE has produced a response for the South East Regional Select Committee outlining key attributes within the Regional Economic Strategy (RES) and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).

RAISE emphasises that the Voluntary/Community Sector (VCS) skills need to be utilised to effectively address the current challenges facing the South East’s economy, and targeted support should be offered to the VCS which is facing increasing demand for its services.

New Plan To Address Safety And Security Of Disabled People
---

A report published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission announces a three point plan to address the safety and security of disabled people and commits to funding advocacy groups. The report suggests that disabled people are at greater risk of being victims of targeted violence and hostility.

JRF Response To Households Below Average Income
---
Following the release of the 2007/2008 Households Below Average Income (HBAI) figures on the official levels of poverty in the UK, Julia Unwin, Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has responded stating that "Today's figures show that even before the recession began, significant pockets of the population were still experiencing poverty. These are challenging economic times, and our research shows that, in the longer term, the whole of society benefits when people are lifted out of poverty. It is vital that we do not let more people slip into poverty."

Funding For IT Projects
---
The Nominet Trust funds internet projects that make a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The Trust hs been awarded £5 million from Nominet, the Internet registry for .uk domains and will provide grants to organisations that can show that their IT-related projects can make a positive difference to disadvantaged and vulnerable groups. Organisations wishing to apply, need to complete an online eligibility questionnaire. Those organisations deemed successful will be provided with a link to a more detailed application form.

Race Inequalities Fund

Voluntary/Community Organisations (VCOs) working to tackle race inequalities are invited to apply for funding through the £6 million “Tackling Race Inequality Fund”. The Fund which will be available for the financial years 2009 -10 and 2010 -11 will provide funding of between £200,000 and £450,000 spread over two years to successful organisations whose work is seen as being of strategic importance. The closing date for applications is the 27th May 2009.

Government Launches Generation Together Programme

Generations Together is a new £5.5million fund for 12 projects across the country where young and older people can engage with each other on equal terms, break down barriers and challenge negative stereotypes. Local authorities can bid for this fund. The programme will run during 2009/10 and 2010/11. The application deadline is the 10th June 2009.

Mini Mediabox

Mediabox offers disadvantaged 13 to 19 year olds the opportunity to develop and produce creative media projects, using film, television, print, radio or online platforms. Mini Mediabox provides grants of £1,500 to £5,000 and is open to grassroots and community youth organisations with a turnover of £100,000 or under. Applications can be submitted at any time.

New £7 Million Apprenticeship Fund

The Government has announced a new £7 million pilot initiative to develop new and innovative approaches to make it easier for small businesses to take on apprentices. Group Training Associations (GTAs) have been in existence since the 1960s to provide skills and training on behalf of groups of employers. There is a two stage application process. Applicants should initially complete a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire the deadline for which is the 28th May 2009. Those applicants successful will then be invited to submit a more detailed application. The closing date for applications is the 13th July 2009.

Awards For Bridging Cultures

Voluntary/Community Organisations that are working towards making a real and meaningful contribution towards the mutual understanding of cultural differences within communities are being invited to enter the Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABC). The deadline for applications is the 14th September 2009.

Funding For Small Charities To Attend Party Conferences

Surrey Supported Employment are holding an event at the Runnymede Centre, Addlestone. The morning provides the opportunity for Voluntary/Community Organisations (VCOs) to promote and advertise services for adults with health conditions moving into work and learning. The afternoon seminar will be themed around ‘volunteering in Surrey’ and the opportunities currently available in Surrey. The deadline for booking forms is the 22nd May.

Wise Up Listening To Older People - 9th June

This event will take place on the 9th June at Central Hall, Westminster and will consider how to better involve older people in the design, commissioning, monitoring and delivery of services. The event will discuss the future of engagement with older people. Four Beacon Council workshops will highlight good practice whereby Councils have received Beacon status.

Reducing Crime And The Fear Of Crime

This special one-day conference, hosted by the Centre for Parliamentary Studies, provides an opportunity to examine the twin targets of reducing crime and increasing public confidence through effective partnership working across all sectors. Delegates will debate, share best practice and network with colleagues from across the community safety, social services and education sector, discussing innovative solutions to reducing crime, the fear of crime and strengthening partnership working within the community.

Coalition Calls For Eco Towns

The government has been urged to push ahead with the development of eco-towns to provide badly needed jobs, boost affordable housing and foster community entrepreneurship. A coalition of organisations including the TUC, Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) and sustainable transport charity Sustrans lobbied ministers as a DCLG consultation on the financial viability of eco-towns ended.

Consultation On Wealthy Donor Law

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has launched an informal consultation on substantial donor legislation. Last month's Budget included the promise of a review of the legislation, which penalises charities if they enter into business relationships with donors who give £25,000 or more in a single tax year or any 'connected persons' to those donors (Third Sector Online, 22 April). HMRC will hold the first meeting for the consultation on 14th May.

The snapshot identifies regional manufacturers difficulty in retaining and recruiting skilled young people as a potential challenge combined with the persistent cash flow problems within the economy.

Protection Of Children In England: Action Plan

Involvement Awards

The deadline is approaching for the involvement awards. The focus of the Involvement Awards is to demonstrate how staff and organisations have worked with patients and the public as equal partners and how this involvement has impacted on health and social care service planning, design and evaluation. High Ratings For Councils Who Listen

A national survey of Third Sector organisations found that where Voluntary/Community Organisations were satisfied with their ability to influence local decisions and had some contact with the local statutory bodies, 75 per cent believed the local public sector positively influenced their work. However where charities did not feel they influenced local decisions and had little or no contact, only 3 per cent reported a positive impact.

Advocacy Worker – ‘What’s to do’ Project
Salary £22,000 pro rata, 14 hours per week post.
Brighton and Hove Speak Out provides a range of advocacy services for people with learning disabilities. This new post is part of a project to work with people with mild learning disabilities who have little or no support from services in the city.

The advocacy worker will support people to explore their interests and find activities in the community that match their goals, to get a more interesting life and to feed back, if they wish, their experiences of taking part in community activities for the Speak Out ‘What’s To Do’ directory. The closing date for applications is Friday 29th May with interviews being held on Wednesday 10th June.

RAISE is holding two breakfast workshops for leaders of infrastructure organisations within the South East. The training titled 'understanding the external environment supporting the frontline' will take place on the 7th July and 4th August from 8:30am till 10.30am in Guildford.
