Help To Identify The Value Of The Voluntary/Community Sector

The value of the Voluntary/Community Sector is often extremely difficult to quantify. Voluntary/Community Organisations understand the extent of their influence but without factual statistics the Sector can often be underestimated. Our Hidden Asset project will produce a quantifiable report on the economic and social value of the VCS.

Third Sector Foresight Training

In partnership with NCVO Third Sector Foresight Partnership team RAISE will be holding two breakfast workshops for leaders of infrastructure organisations within the South East. The training titled 'making sense of your environment' will take place on the 7th July and 4th August from 8:30am till 10.30am in Guildford.

In addition RAISE will also be holding training for development workers or information officers. The course will focus on 'understanding the external environment supporting the frontline' and will span a full day on the 20th July in Guildford. Just to confirm this will be on Monday 20th July NOT the 10th July as there was an error in our hardcopy booking form which was mailed out.

Measuring Inequalities Request For Interviewees

Researchers at the London School of Economics are looking for participants to interview as part of a project for the Equality Measurement Framework. The interview will take one hour and participants will receive £15.

Modernisation Fund
---
The Modernisation Fund is designed to help the Voluntary/Community Sector (VCS) to respond to the impact of the recession. The funding will be targeted at Voluntary/Community Organisations (VCOs) with an annual turnover of between £150,000 and £750,000. Funding is split into two phases

Phase One : Know Your Needs
During June and July, organisations delivering services benefiting people affected by the recession will be able to apply for £1,000 bursaries to pay for initial advice to explore how they can increase their impact and become more resilient by working more closely with others.

Phase Two : Grow Together
From September, Phase Two grants of up to £10,000 will be available to help organisations that would like to take significant steps towards collaboration or merger having gone through phase 1 of the programme.

Secret Millionaire Fund

The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and Channel 4's TV programme, The Secret Millionaire have joined together to encourage viewers to act on the charitable inspiration fuelled by the show. Big Lottery funding worth £1 million has been made available for people to apply for grants of between £300 and £10,000 from the Secret Millionaire Fund. Viewers can propose a community project or organisation that they think would benefit from BIG funding. Applications are now open for this fund. The application deadline is the 21st December.

NESTA Age Unlimited Fund

NESTA’s Public Service Innovation Lab, which aims to develop radical and innovative responses to the challenges facing public service delivery, has announced a call for ideas under its new Age Unlimited programme. A total of £650,000 is available for projects that could radically alter the way older people work in the UK, or prepare for retirement. The closing date for applications is 12 noon on the 19th June 2009.

Organisations that work with young people have the opportunity to apply for funding through The Learning Launchpad. The Learning Launchpad is a grant making fund delivered by the Young Foundation working in partnership with Edge that provides investment to organisations in their early stages of development. In particular, the Learning Launchpad is looking to support ideas that have a profound social impact both on individuals and on society as a whole; are innovative; are sustainable; can be replicated and are run by passionate and competent people. The next closing date for applications is the 11th June 2009.

The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund

The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund is a registered charity which was established primarily to aid the research into learning disability and to aid the care and relief of those affected by learning disability by making grants to Voluntary/Community Organisations. The Trust consider under learning disability the conditions generally referred to as severe learning difficulties, together with autism. In this area, they consider projects concerning children or adults. Learning disability, thus defined, is a priority for funding. They will not offer grants for research into or care of those with mental illness or dyslexia. They offer grants from £250 upwards. The next deadline for applications is 1st October 2009.

European Youth Foundation Grants

The European Youth Foundation makes grants to international not for profit youth organisations and networks. The types of activities supported include international youth meeting, the development of projects that benefits young people and help towards the administrative costs of eligible organisations and networks. In addition the Foundation also funds a range of pilot projects. The next application deadline is the 1st October 2009.

Helping UK Charities To Monopolise The Internet

Talk Talk has announced that its "Innovation in The Community" is open to applications. "Innovation in The Community" enables UK charities and community groups to harness the power of the internet. Up to 30 winners are awarded with up to £2,000 each to fund technology related projects as well as technology equipment, to help make the most of the internet.

Government Launched Targeted Support Fund

The government has announced its new £15 million Real Help for Communities: Targeted Support Fund is open to applications. Through this fund grants are available to small, local third sector service providers who have experienced increased demand as a result of the recession. The fund is seeking to support those who are providing key, recession focussed services.

Joint CDX/CDSE Event – 4th June Crawley

The Community Development Xchange and Community Development South East are working with regional community development partners to hold a series of regional events to bring together practitioners across all sectors to discuss the key challenges of current policy agendas and explore practical solutions. The sessions will include an overview of national developments, an explanation of the value of community development and how better to communicate its impact at policy level and on the ground.

Homelessness And The Economy

The effective prevention of homelessness remains at the heart of the government's work. Communities and Local Government is working with other government departments to ensure services are targeted at the most vulnerable groups to prevent homelessness and improve access to services and opportunities but there are still big challenges ahead. This one-day event will provide an overview of the progress made in a number of homelessness policy areas, with a particular focus on the South East region. The day will feature practical advice and guidance on the effective prevention of homelessness.

Deaf Hampshire offer a range of services and support for the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing, and information on other resources and support available. A range of British Sign Language level 1 courses are currently available, at a cost of £250, this includes three assessments. The courses are available in Southampton and Portsmouth.

Collaboration Support Skills For Development Workers - Brighton

The course takes place on the 1st and 8th July. This 2 day course is aimed at people working in the Voluntary/Community Sector across Sussex who support groups in the sector to work collaboratively. Underpinning themes will include networking, effective communication in developing relationships, barriers to participation, bring about change, dealing with the culture and dynamics and accountability. This course is part of a programme called the ‘collaboration National Support Service’ led by BASSAC and funded by Capacity Builders under the Improving Support Initiative.

Ready Steady Change – 16th July

Ready Steady Change is a free one-day course that introduces participants to a selection of training methods and tools to enhance their skills and knowledge in increasing children and young people’s effective participation in decision-making. The course focuses on values, change and action. Ready Steady Change approaches participation from a children’s rights framework and is suitable for all individuals involved in participation work.

Commission For The Compact Invites Tenders For Baseline Survey
---
The Commission for the Compact has opened the tendering process for its first survey to gauge awareness of the agreement across government. The survey, will be carried out between July 2009 and January 2010, then annually. The aim of the survey will be to measure awareness, knowledge, use and understanding of the Compact in central government departments and non-departmental government bodies.

A new Berkshire East project is seeking to appoint three new posts to set up and deliver a funding advice service and procurement implementation across the three unitary areas of Bracknell Forest, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead.

- Funding Advisor
Bracknell Forest, 3 days per week, 3 year fixed term contract, £25,306 pro rata £15,183 per annum (including employer pension and contribution)

- Funding Advisor
Windsor, Maidenhead and Slough 4 days per week on a 3 year fixed term contract. (including employer pension and contribution)

- Procurement Implementation Officer
Slough based working across the region 3 days per week on a 2 year fixed term contract earning £32,000 pro rata £19,200 per annum (including employer pension and contribution)
